Retro Vs Current Map ..........
(Ignore the black line on Retro 15 ..... Retro hole used as a "New Course"temp hole in the first Retro Tourney)

I'd be interested in seeing this map. It was visible for a few minutes yesterday but then I think you were editing and it got lost.

I liked the one Single L had up for just a brief time, it had the new one and the old one on the same picture. I'm not super familiar with Walnut Ridge, have probably only played it 6 times.

Just over a month away, shelter #3 (to the left) has been rented for both days, permit will be signed as soon as the insurance certificate is in hand (should be this week). Once that is done, pre reg will begin.

It will be split divisions - 2 days....

Open / intermediate

Advanced / rec

I will decided which days they play this week as well

Yeah, Walnut used to be my favorite course when I first started...Probably because I could actually reach most of the holes. The they maxed it out for worlds and I hated it for a few years

Was the switch made around 2003-2004 then? I've seen a few sleeves out there like on 13 near the teepad and wondered what was going on. Looks considerably shorter what would be a good score in the retro layout? Hoping to make it to this one I love Walnut

Yes, 2003 mainly. And some of those sleeves are alternate placements for the current course that never get used I think. The old was fun in it's way, but really the new one is better IMO. World class. Particularly like the bushwhacked holes in the back, 11 and 12. The old holes I miss the most are 8, 10 and 17.

If you are playing just the old 18 layout, I'd say something in the 46-48 range.

I miss old 14.

Thanks to some hard work and a little money from the
Des Moines Disc Golf Club, as well as cooperation from
Saylor Township and the Army Corps of Engineers, the
baskets from M*rgo Fr*nkel (which is temporarily closed
until July 4) have been installed at the tournament
course at Walnut Ridge.

Walnut Ridge is a beautiful, long, open course at a
Rec area on Saylorville Lake north of Des Moines. The
Des Moines Disc Golf Club has permission to place a
permanent course at this site, but must come up with
funding to do so.

The baskets will be at Walnut Ridge until the July 4th
weekend, at which time they will be returned to M*rgo.
The first day of the Des Moines Disc Golf Challenge
will be held at Walnut Ridge on Saturday, May 24th. On
Friday, May 23rd, a round of Discraft Stokely Doubles will
be held at Walnut Ridge.

**Challenge Update** -- An additional $150 has been added
to the pro purse by "The Legend".

Thanks,
rodney

I don't recall if I was listed as co-designer with Nixt or not, and I honestly don't remember how much I contributed to the design. I know we both looked at the property independently, and several of our routing choices were prettymuch the same. Regardless, we didn't really have any clue as to appropriate hole lengths back in the day. There were several holes that were not a great length -- the dreaded long drive and a tiny upshot -- thus almost always a 3. Also, Houck remarked at the lack of touch shots -- although I thought #4 and #12 and #14 gave good variety on the shorter end. Oh well, it was certainly a fun course, and a great place to be.

Here's one other retro tidbit I found regarding Walnut and Grandview from July of '98:

Message-ID: <6nqq6d$ugu$1@ins8.netins.net>#1/1

On Monday, June 30, four confirmed tornadoes and a
couple of meso-cyclones ripped through the Des Moines
area. Two area disc golf courses felt the full
force of the storm.

The course at Grandview Park on the east side of
Des Moines has been left unplayable. Dozens of
mature trees were either uprooted or broken off
just above the ground. Countless other large
branches were ripped from trees and now litter the
ground. One Mach III basket (chain assembly) was
damaged by a falling limb. The park has been closed
since the storm. My guess is it will be a month
before the course is playable, and probably several
months before all the debris is cleared.

The Walnut Ridge course in a northern Des Moines suburb
was also hit. Several mature trees we uprooted, and
several others were severely damaged. Luckily, the
damage at this course won't change the play of the
course too much. As of today, holes 6 and 10 are
not playable, but should be cleared within a week
or two.

If you need more info or are planning a trip to
Des Moines, feel free to drop me an e-mail for a status
update.

Thanks,
rodney

I am guessing it will be discussed at the DMDGC meeting tonight after league. The meeting is open to anyone who wants to show up at the south side Okoboji bar and grill after league tonight.

The dates are posted on pdga.com. I walked the course with Dave Sunday and we were shocked how many of the old collars we were able to locate. Unlike the previous Retro that Tyler and I ran in 2009, this event will be all retro layout. On the holes that have multiple tee pads, you'll play both, one each round. In addition, the holes that had multiple pin placements will move as well.

Dave is going to need upwards of 10+ temporary baskets, so if you have a tournament style basket you can part with for a weekend, send beery a PM so he can start getting a list together.
