I think after living there for a while you grow accustomed to the smell. However, after moving away and then returning a few months later, that smell hits pretty hard. It is significantly stronger by the stockyards and the meat plant, but it still lingers throughout the city.
To me, that city just seemed too depressing. Everything was a controversy (which probably has much to do with the towns politics, and the fact that I went to Heelan) and everything seemed to be running down. They are doing some great work out by the mall. Not sure the last time you were there but it's really expanded.
Personally, I vowed never to return there, even though I have met some great people and life long friends.. But then again, I wasn't born there as you were, so my ties are not as strong.
